I bought a new shirt and wore it a few weeks back for a barbecue. It is a man's cream cotton shirt, military style, with woven cream and brown flowery designs on the bottom front and on the back. I was waiting for the comments to come as I'm never en femme in public.
Eventually the comments came-"Where did you get THAT!", "It's a bit too Country & Western for me". Other guys didn't comment but I kept thinking :"They think I'm gay".
I had teamed my shirt with cream casual trousers and a rather fetching pair of unisex sandles. My head is shaven and as I was sitting down on a blanket one of the (genetic) girls said I looked like a Muslim on his prayer mat.
Then there was a general discussion of my shirt and my daughter said I think it's really nice and most of the girls agreed. Maybe next time I will add some lipstick and really raise some eyebrows.
I often wear use lipseal anyway so what's the big deal- for any homophobics ( is there such a thing as a transgenderphobic? ) out there , reading my blog, wishing you could dress up in heels and some pretty clothes. Try it. You might like it.
By the way- I love Country and Western: Hank Williams,

( Julie shifts into melancholy mode:)Those were the days, saturday morning pictures, 6d to watch Roy Rogers singing a Cowboy song with Trigger doing the chorus

Julie takes guitar, straddles the settee and sings a few bars then falls off Trigger...

The oufit sounds OK, but country & western? ;)
There, I had to come out of the closet about C & W at some time. I hope you don't think I'm a freak or something. It's just something I love to do.
It all started when I was about 12 and I tried on my mum's Glen Campbell (size 12 ") Before I knew it I was tapping my feet and I rummaged through the rest of her stuff and I discovered Frankie Lane.
At first I would only play the records when I was alone but soon I yearned to go out to a C & W convention. To my surprise I discovered a local C & W band who played at a local pub. They did not seem ashamed of the music they were playing but I just pretended to be normal and flicked peanuts at them, yet secretly wishing I could join in the yodels and thigh slapping.
I didn't dare mention this to
my Heavy Metal friends for they would never have understood. They would have ridiculed me and made fun of me " Ooh I love your checked shirt dear, and I 'll bet you look really sweet with a double base"
My doctor didn't help. He insisted I was a repressed gospell singer and prescibed Black Sabbath L.P.sessions.
I got more attracted to Roy Rogers and finally I decided I had to change completely and bought myself that shirt and a Dolly Parton Greatest Hits cd.
I've never looked back. I stay dressed in all black with cowboy boots and false long sideburns for days. Don't knock it. Try it, its great fun.
